(00:03) [Music] what's the difference between a good sci-fi film and a great one is it the plot the visuals the characters or is it something else a good Sci-Fi story will of course have cool technology interesting aliens and futuristic dystopias however at the heart of every great sci-fi story you'll find more than just Creative World building and technological spectacle because truly compelling science fiction always leaves an unsolved mystery for us to puzzle over when you think of the greatest science fiction Mysteries you probably

(00:36) think of inception Donnie Darko or even 2001 and even though those are all undeniably perplexing very few films managed to create a web of deception quite like exmachina exmachina is one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies ever but despite his critical success it never achieved mainstream recognition like other sci-fi films did but this is typical for movies that make the audience think too much this happened with the thing Blade Runner and even Fight Club years later they became cold Classics but when it came to theatrical

(01:04) profits they were all technically box office failures exmachina doesn't have big action sequences elaborate set pieces or dazzling visual effects instead it takes a nuanced approach and focuses on the more intimate aspects of creating artificial intelligence it's a thought-provoking exploration that delves deep into the ethical implications of technological advancements and as Society becomes more dependent on technology to function it forces us to reflect on the responsibilities that come with this complex relationship the plot to

(01:33) exmachina is simple a programmer gets invited to spend 7 days at a remote facility with the CEO of his company where he gets to test an Android to see if she's true artificial intelligence or just a billion dooll sex doll but what if everything I just told you is a lie and everything that every character does and says is intentionally trying to deceive you what if the point of the film is to test the audience and the entire scenario is set up to hide the fact that none of these characters are actually human I need to stop smoking

(02:01) this [ __ ] here boy do you know what the touring test is it's when a human interacts with a computer and if the human doesn't know they're interacting with a computer the test is passed and what does a past tell us that the computer has artificial intelligence the touring test is only passed if a human doesn't know they're interacting with the computer so why would he immediately tell Caleb that she's a robot if he was really trying to test her are you building an AI I've already built one

(02:31) why would you do that why would you do any of that the requirements of the Turing test are pretty simple so why not just call it something else if you're going to do something completely different it's just in the Turing test the machine should be hidden from The Examiner no no no we're way past that the real test is to show you that she's a robot and then see if you still feel she has Consciousness that does not make sense Nathan has complete control over this environment so if he was actually

(02:55) trying to test AA there's a 100 different scenarios that he could have cooked up that would have been better than this but even if he didn't tell Caleb she was a robot I seriously doubt she could have passed the test either way Ava moves acts and speaks like a robot so even if she had skin and she was able to move around like Kiyoko I don't know how anyone would think she was a human and when you compare the way she talks to Jade I want you make me out you already know my name and you can see that I'm a machine but the way she moves

(03:24) to Kiyoko it's easy to see that she's not even the most advanced AI in the facility that alone should prove that Ava isn't even Advanced enough to be tested and Nathan even says so himself I think it's the next model it's going to be the real breakthrough if he already knows the next model is going to be the Breakthrough model why is he wasting his time testing her and why is he so interested in Caleb's feelings instead of technical information that would actually be useful in making improvements to the next model look do

(03:55) me a favor lay off the textbook approach and then getting linearized words but then I started to realize the model is some kind of hybrid Caleb answer me this how do you feel about nothing analytical just how do you feel the touring test is only passed if a human doesn't know they're interacting with the computer but if an AI has already passed the test the next step is to see if it can convince another AI that they're human who was the real test you Caleb is the one that's being tested that's why Nathan is so concerned with

(04:26) his feelings and not Ava's he wants to see if he can not only convince AA that he's real but also to see if he's capable of falling in love the ability to make decisions based on emotions is the next step in creating true artificial intelligence that's why he's always encouraging him to use his feelings instead of his intellect and why he's constantly telling him that Ava likes him and that she can have sex you're the first man she's met that isn't mean can you blame her for getting a crush on you

(04:51) just think about this telling Caleb that AA was a robot completely invalidates the point of the test so the only reason it would make sense to tell him is if Nathan was using as a misdirection so he would never think he was an AI like she was and this works like a charm because the first time he meets her he asks her if she has a name and not what her name is do you have a name yes he's talking to her like she's a thing and not a person and this proves that Nathan isn't actually testing her the writer director

(05:19) Alex Garland has a lot of very interesting interviews where he talks about Ai and Consciousness and he's really given this topic a lot of thought but in his Reddit AMA he says something that's more interesting than anything he says in an interview he said the protagonist is a [Music] robot now the natural assumption is that he's talking about Ava but she's obviously not the protagonist she has very little character development and the story is not being told from her perspective so the only person he could

(05:47) be talking about is [Music] Caleb I usually like when movies don't waste the first 15 minutes on pointless details but in a film where the protagonist could be an AI it feels more like this quick opening is showing us that he didn't have an actual life to explore now he never says he doesn't have friends but everything about his personality and the way he acts makes it seem that way the only thing he ever mentions about his life outside of the facility is the death of his parents when he was young and the fact that his

(06:14) only memory is a tragic one reminds me of the cornerstones from Westworld a Cornerstone is an implanted memory that the host base their personalities around and they typically involve a painful or emotionally heavy event Caleb conveniently has no family no friends no personal life and no clear memories about his past and when Ava asked him about his earliest memory he says that he remembers a female voice in the color blue what's your earliest memory it's just a sound I think this sound is my mother's voice and or maybe

(06:48) blue you may now enter the [Music] residence coincidence I think not when she asks him if he likes Mozart he nervously avoids the question like he doesn't know who that is do you like that I like the pat mode now a lot of people like music from the past but it's strange that his favorite music would be a band that was most popular in the ' 80s and 90s but he somehow doesn't know what Ghostbusters is who are you going to call Ghostbusters what who you going to call Ghostbusters it's a it's a movie

(07:20) man you don't find that suspicious you don't find that suspicious you don't find that suspicious after Kiyoko show shows him that she's a robot Caleb Gets the idea that he might be one too so he starts checking himself out to see if anything looks off and then he cuts his arm open and bleeds all over the bathroom now The Logical assumption is that robots can't bleed right but there's a few things you probably haven't considered but you haven't thought it through and I already

(07:46) know you well actually nerds will be foaming at the mouth in the comments as soon as you start watching the video so this was the first thing I made sure I can answer because I already know you love telling me how wrong I am now there's a few different ways we can approach this idea and even though I know you want to explain how it's possible for Caleb to bleed if he's really a robot I don't think you will be satisfied with any answer I gave you I think focusing on the blood leaves too much room for interpretation because

(08:09) there's a lot of things about the Androids that we just don't know we don't know if their skin bleeds because we never see it cut we don't know if the transparent parts of their bodies are full of clear liquid that turn red when it hits the air we don't know if bleeding is a feature that Nathan added to some of the models and we don't know if the red liquid is actually even blood this is a science fiction movie after all so any of those could technically be true but I know you wouldn't be happy

(08:33) with any of those explanations because they're all based on too many hypotheticals so the only way to get to an answer that you will accept is to focus on Caleb's Behavior instead we never see anything other than the blood we see his reaction to something but we can't say he didn't see mechanical Parts because the camera Cuts away and wants us to focus on his reaction instead this movie goes out of his way to show us that Caleb is weak so he shouldn't even be capable of cutting himself like this

(08:56) but even if he could cut himself deep enough to see his muscle why doesn't he react like it hurts that [ __ ] back there is not real this would definitely need stitches which he never gets then he punches the mirror and doesn't break his hand no broken hand no stitches and no reaction to things that should be painful this is just like the naked robot that broke her hands on the wall or with Ava when Nathan breaks her arm they're both obvious robots and neither of them have a reaction to injury maybe you could say reacted to it

(09:24) later or maybe he was so mad that he just ignored the pain but why would he be angry if he found out he was a human we never see him act this way any other time and the only way this Behavior would make sense is if he found out he was really a robot now the strangest part about this scene is that Kiyoko is watching it all happen for some reason and the fact that she not only has access to the computers and the cameras but that she's smart enough to know how to operate them and that she would understand what her telling Caleb her

(09:49) secret would make him think is just more proof that everything Nathan tells us is a misdirection for what's really going on Kiyoko is pretty much a background character for most of the film but she's extremely important to the story because she exposes that the Turing test isn't what we're told it is Ava is supposed to be the newest AI that Nathan's created so why does Kiyoko not only look and move like a real human but she's so real that Caleb didn't even know she was AI until she told him even though Ava is

(10:19) able to have conversations and show many signs of intelligence Kiyoko displays actual human behavior that Ava never does she shows curiosity sadness and she could even contemplate play the meaning of art Nathan tells us that she can't understand what they're saying but if that was true then why is the camera focused on her during their conversations why would she be interested in the painting after Nathan talks about it and why would she be sad after he was mean to her just think about this if she can't understand

(10:45) English then how does she know what Nathan wants how does she know when to make food or what type of food to make or even when to bring more alcohol or clean up the dishes maybe she wasn't programmed to communicate or understand language but she must have learned at some point because she obviously understands what's being said and she still tries to communicate with Caleb Nathan said he doesn't want her telling anyone about what goes on inside of the facility you're wasting your time talking to her she doesn't understand

(11:08) English it's like a firewall against Leakes it means I can talk Trade Secrets over dinner and know it'll go no further but if she did hear him say something top secret what could she do with that information even though Kiyoko was programmed with communication limitations she was still trying to communicate with Caleb the entire time now she couldn't just directly tell him that everyone was a robot but there wasn't a limitation on her showing him that she was one this is why it seems like she's trying to have sex with him

(11:33) in this scene but when she's completely nude later on she doesn't the reason she's trying to take off her clothes here is because she's trying to show him that she's not a human like she does later on but he completely misunderstands her intentions and stops her from undressing I think she was also trying to communicate with him when she spilled the wine because she's always so precise and proper and this is the only time she's clumsy like this and when she's cleaning up the spill she's

(11:55) staring directly at him because she's desperately trying to communicate but her programming won't allow it she knows Caleb's not a human and the reason she told him that she was a robot was because it was the only way she could communicate that he was one [Music] too in a lot of ways Kiyoko is more advanced than AA is and when you pay attention to the other female robot Her speech communication and behavior are all more natural sounding than Ava's is too her reaction to being locked in a room is also very human she's frustrated

(12:27) and angry and she shows an emotional desire to be free we never see Ava show any emotions even when she's attacking Nathan and trying to escape Ava moves acts and speaks like a robot and instead of trying to convince Caleb that she was a conscious being she was only concerned with using deception so she can escape she was so focused on escaping that she never considered what she planned to do when she does she doesn't know anything about the outside world she doesn't have a way to recharge her battery and Caleb

(12:54) would have helped her but she treats him like he was her enemy everything she does proves she's an objective based robot like a terminator and not a true AI that can think Beyond her primary objectives even though he programmed her to be deceptive Nathan never thought that she would be able to manipulate other AI on an algorithmic level or rewrite her code and give herself the robot version of a Jedi mind trick just like May from Westworld the marshals decided to practice their quick draws with each [Music]

(13:26) other this is why she's able to communicate with Kiyoko and why she's able to manipulate Caleb into falling in love and helping her Escape if an AI knows it's a machine it should be able to make upgrades and change aspects of his personality abilities and desires and no matter how humanlike they get they would never be limited by genetics or biology like we are so they will always be able to operate in the most efficient way they could easily be programmed to do very specific things just like Kiyoko was programmed to serve

(13:52) and AA was programmed to manipulate but the scariest part is a self-aware machine's ability to think outside of the box in a way that we can never imagine and their ability to basically reprogram themselves to have whatever abilities they wanted to there's never any technical explanation on how the AI is programmed but because the AI brain is so similar to a human brain it would definitely follow certain verbal commands just like Siri or Alexa this is why Kiyoko knows how to do things like clean up and cook food and this is why

(14:19) Nathan was so shocked that Ava didn't obey his commands in the hallway stop AA said stop we even see an example of this when Nathan plays music and Kyoko starts dancing this is an auditory command that she was programmed to respond to so we know she's capable of responding to verbal commands too as far as we know Nathan never let any of the robots interact with each other so they never had a chance to create their own special language but this is exactly what happened when Facebook let two AI programs talk to each other Facebook has

(14:48) enacted an emergency shutdown of two artificial intelligence programs the social media giant left into action after it discovered the two programs were writing their own code at first they thought it was simply gibberish but they soon realized the programs had invented their own language and were actually talking to each other these programs are nowhere near as advanced as the AI in this film but it makes sense that AA and Kiyoko would be able to communicate in a way that humans couldn't understand just look at this

(15:13) scene Kiyoko definitely understands what she's saying and if she wasn't programmed to understand English AA has to be speaking to her in a different language that she can understand Nathan's been alone with Kiyoko for months or maybe even years and he never seems like he's worried about her attacking him I would imagine he programed some sort of safety precaution into the AI because he trusts Kiyoko with knives and other potential weapons and he feels comfortable enough getting drunk around her and sleeping next to

(15:39) her too but what changed why did she decide to stab him now she wasn't trying to escape and Nathan didn't make any changes to her programming so there's only one reason why she decided to stab him she did it because Ava was able to manipulate her by bypassing her programming so instead of being a maid and a sex bot her primary objective was change to help Ava Escape Ava was programmed with deception as her primary objective so it only makes sense that she would be able to deceive other robots too and this is why Caleb fell in

(16:08) love with an obvious robot in only a few days and why he would agree to help her Escape when nothing about his plan makes sense we're getting out of here tonight how I get Nathan blind drunk then I take his key card and reprogram all the security protocols in this place when he wakes he's locked inside and we've walked out of here oh that's stupid really stupid even though Caleb never gets drunk and he never actually drinks any [Music] alcohol why would he think he could peer pressure Nathan into getting drunk

(16:47) without him getting drunk too why you you don't want to drink and you're going to make me drink alone hey man you want to get wasted you go right ahead really [ __ ] this plan goes Way Beyond the point of stupidity and it sounds like something too beta version AI would think up aa's trapped in a room all day so she only knows what Caleb tells her about Nathan and because she doesn't fully understand Nathan and Caleb's social interactions and neither of them understand the nuances of human behavior

(17:11) it would make sense that two robots cooked up a plan like this now how was this plan going to going to go anyway cuz you didn't totally explain so you were going to get me drunk now let's just say everything went the way he planned what was he going to do after he escaped with Ava did he think Nathan wouldn't noce she was gone did he think he would just steal a billion dollar machine one of the richest men in the world than just go back to work on Monday and live happily ever after with his new robot girlfriend that's the

(17:35) stupidest idea I've ever heard you imile but this is exactly what I said about Ava she never thought about what she would do after she escaped and the fact that Caleb adopted the exact same plan with the exact same flaws makes me think that AA reprogrammed him just like she did with Kiyoko I think she knew Caleb was an AI from the start and every time they interacted she was slowly changing his primary objectives to help her Escape everything I've set up to this point has been pretty basic stuff that I'm sure

(18:04) some of you might have considered at some point but you know I got to complicate the [ __ ] out of this idea because it's not enough to just say that Caleb is a robot I think Nathan is also a robot too because he's the only one that satisfies the requirements of the touring test in this scenario the touring test is only passed when a human doesn't know they're interacting with the robot but it could also be passed if a robot doesn't know they're interacting with another robot too if you put two AI

(18:26) in a room and one of them is so humanlike that the other one can't tell the difference wouldn't that be the same thing as a human versus computer touring test well if you can't tell does it matter Nathan is the only one that could be the subject of the test because he's the only one that everyone truly believes is a human Caleb could be a human but because Kiyoko and AA had never met him before there would always be the suspicion that he might be another AI Ava and Kiyoko knew that each other were robots the first time they

(18:52) met and because Nathan is the only other person they know they would never think that he was a robot like them what better way to perform a touring test than to have the subject of the test conducting the test it would be the ultimate misdirection that no one would ever suspect and it's the only thing that would make sense in this scenario now I don't think there's a single thing that Nathan says that's true he lied about Kiyoko being a human he lied about her ability to understand what they were

(19:14) saying he lied about the power outages aa's real objectives and he lied three times about why Caleb was selected he lies more than old B Kenobi but somehow you believe him when he says he's trying to do a Turing test on AA even though the way he's doing it doesn't make any sense everything he says is was a lie and the worst part about it is that all of them were completely unnecessary if he was going to lie anyway why not lie in a way that maximizes the efficiency of the experiment the purest way to do a

(19:39) touring test would have been to invite Caleb out and tell him that he was working on a new search engine or something and see if he could figure out that AA was a AI on his own he could have given her a real objective that wasn't about being deceptive or escaping and he could have told her that she has s days to interact with Caleb and if he never suspects that she's an AI she can leave and have a normal life now he doesn't actually have to do that but it would give her objective that forces her

(20:00) to act like a real human and not a deception machine and he can tell her that if he figures out she's not a human she just needs a few upgrades or more training or something so she doesn't feel like she'll be destroyed if she fails and of course he would give her skin and make her look normal and let her walk around the house like Kyoko too now that's how you would do a turing chest if you were really trying to chest AA so we 100% know that's not what he's really trying to do Caleb starts to

(20:21) recognize some serious flaws in this experiment and he suspects that AA is being used as a distraction he calls her The Magician's hot assistant and later on Nathan admits that's exactly what she is you were right about the magician's hot assistant what are you talking about misdirection so if she's the magician out assistant that means there also has to be a magician and a magic trick being performed the magic trick is that no one in the house is human and the magician is the real Nathan that's watching

(20:46) everything in the facility from somewhere else this 7-Day experiment is set up perfectly to have four AI interacting with each other without human interference and the test is to see if they can use their specific skills and ability to complete their objectives think of it like a murder mystery without the murder and everyone is trying to accomplish something and someone else is trying to stop them Caleb is trying to learn the truth Nathan is trying to keep secrets Kiyoko is trying to evolve and go against her

(21:11) programming and AA is trying to manipulate everyone and Escape each one of them is given certain powers handicaps and objectives and they're all perfectly balanced so no one has an advantage over anyone else Nathan is in control of the environment and has access to everything but no one trusts him and he's always drunk Caleb is liked by everything one and understands programming but he has limited access and knowledge about the environment Ava can manipulate everyone and reprogram their code but she looks like a robot

(21:37) and she's stuck in a room and Kiyoko has access to everything and everyone sees her as neutral but she can't directly communicate with anyone because Nathan lies about almost everything we don't know what the highest level of AI technology is we 100% know that Ava isn't the most advanced robot in the building because we can see other robots that are better than she is AA might just be a basic level one type bot but because Caleb has never seen any type of AI he would be so amazed that he would

(22:03) never consider that there could be a level 10 like Nathan imagine if you went back to 1980 and showed someone an old school adamantium Nokia or a razor flip phone they would be so amazed by early 2000s technology because it's better than anything they've ever seen that they would never consider something like an iPhone 15 existed when it comes to the blood I think the explanation I gave for Caleb also makes sense for Nathan too this is a sci-fi movie with artificially intelligent robots that have needs wants and desires they can

(22:31) walk talk have sex and do almost everything a human can do but somehow you absolutely won't accept red liquid coming out of their bodies if they're cut or stabbed we don't know anything about their Anatomy so we don't know if this red liquid is even blood like I said before it could be some other type of fluid or it could be an intentional feature to hide that their AI just in case one of them cuts themselves even though it's drinking might be one of the things that makes everyone think he's a

(22:55) human it's the one thing that exposes that he's obviously not just think about this if he can stop drinking in the end why wouldn't he stop for 7 days so he can do his research we know that he has self-control because he shows he can quit when he wants to and we only see him really drunk two times out of the seven days he doesn't have a drinking problem the drinking is a programmed flaw to make him seem more human this is why he's always drinking when he's with Caleb and never drinking when he's alone

(23:20) working if Caleb ever suspected that Nathan was a robot the fact that he's always drinking would make the idea seem stupid it's just another layer of misdirection that makes him look undeniably human and before you ask if it's even possible for a robot to get drunk answer me this if they can be programmed to have sex and feel physical pleasure why can't they be programmed to act and feel intoxicated when they drink alcohol just think about this why doesn't Nathan let AA walk around like Kyoko he goes in the room with her and

(23:46) rips up her picture so we know he's not afraid of being alone with her so why is he afraid of her later on we also see him physically interacting with other AI too so why is Ava always locked up Nathan was programmed to keep all the Ai Se unless he was in control of their interactions so she has to stay locked away because it's the only way he can monitor what she says to Caleb the real Nathan set this entire situation up so he can watch 4 AI all at different stages of development and all with different desires and abilities
